How to hire a QA engineer in 14 days: a day-by-day plan

The short answer

A QA hire can reach a signed offer in 14 days if you fix the brief on day 1, screen in parallel and decide on one rubric. You compete with 1,381 public automation and SDET postings, 23% of them remote. Notice periods start after day 14. If you cannot wait, project-based testing starts in 7 days.

Key findings

  • In our snapshot, 1,381 public postings are for QA Automation Engineers or SDETs; 23% are remote and 17% hybrid, so your search area is wider than your city.
  • The median posting names 3 tools. A brief with more than five is a wish list, not a role.
  • US posted pay for these two roles has a median midpoint of $140k (n=108); budget by level below.
  • Faster routes exist: project-based testing starts in 7 days, and Flex task capacity can start in 48 hours.

01The 14-day plan

Speed comes from decisions made early, not from rushing interviews. This plan reaches a signed offer on day 14. It assumes one hiring manager who can decide, one engineer who can run a technical review and a budget agreed before day 1.

02Read the postings you compete with

Before you write the brief, read the 1,381 postings you compete with. They are in the same pool of candidates.

The median posting names 3 tools. Pick the three that decide whether someone can do the job on day 30 and mark the rest as 'nice to have'. A list of ten required tools makes an ad hard to match, for you and for candidates.

Write the ad with the job description generator and show the pay range. See pay transparency and QA job ads for how rare that still is.

03Set the budget band

For a US hire, the 108 public postings for these two roles with a published US annual range give a rough budget by level. Samples are small.

US posted annual pay: QA Automation Engineer and SDET (midpoints)
LevelnMedianMiddle half
Mid56$114k$99k-$150k
Senior35$175k$142k-$185k
Lead16$192k$140k-$218k

04What slows hiring down

  • Waiting for the perfect candidate. Score against the brief and decide at the debrief; do not reopen the search after day 7.
  • Slow replies. Answer applications within 48 hours. The best candidates have other processes.
  • Unscored interviews. Use one rubric for everyone: code reading, test design, communication, role fit.
  • A take-home that takes a weekend. Keep any task under 2 hours and pay for longer ones.
  • Hiding the pay. If you will not publish a range, be ready to state it in the first call, so neither side spends an hour on a mismatch.

05Method and limits

Sample: 3,863 public postings harvested 20 Oct 2026 from employer career pages and public job feeds. Listings are postings, not people or confirmed openings: one role open in several cities counts several times (2,417 distinct titles across 3,863 postings). PassRidge talent-pipeline roles (149) are excluded from every statistic.

Competing postings means postings classed as QA Automation Engineer or SDET (1,381). Pay uses the 108 of them with a US annual range. The 14-day plan is PassRidge's recommended process, not a measured average.
