What Playwright is used for in QA
Playwright is an open-source browser automation library and test runner from Microsoft. It drives Chromium, Firefox and WebKit from TypeScript, Python, Java or C#.
- End-to-end UI tests of web apps in CI, with parallel workers and sharding across machines.
- Cross-browser checks, including WebKit as a proxy for Safari.
- API-assisted tests: request fixtures create data and reuse a saved login state.
- Debugging with traces (DOM snapshots, network, console) that show exactly where a test failed.

Learn Playwright in five steps
A practical order that gets you to a working project. Build something at each step; reading alone does not stick.
- 1
Run codegen and your first test
Install @playwright/test, record a flow with codegen, then rewrite it with role and label locators.
- 2
Learn locators and web-first assertions
Use getByRole, getByLabel and expect(...).toBeVisible() so waiting is automatic.
- 3
Master fixtures and test isolation
Build fixtures for authenticated state and test data; one browser context per test.
- 4
Add API setup and network control
Create data through the request fixture and mock or stub slow third parties with route handling.
- 5
Run it in CI at scale
Use sharding, retries only for diagnosis, trace on first retry and an HTML report as a build artifact.
Playwright vs Selenium
| Aspect | Playwright | Selenium |
|---|---|---|
| Waiting | Auto-waits for actionability; assertions retry | You write explicit waits for each condition |
| Browsers | Bundled Chromium, Firefox, WebKit | Any browser through its driver, including real Safari |
| Test runner | Built in: parallelism, fixtures, reporters, traces | Bring your own (JUnit, TestNG, pytest, NUnit) |
| Language reach | TypeScript, Python, Java, C# | Java, Python, C#, JavaScript, Ruby, Kotlin and more |
Choose Playwright when
You start a new web project, want fast and stable tests with little glue code, and your team writes TypeScript or Python.
Choose Selenium when
You have a large existing Java or C# suite, need real Safari or legacy browsers, or must use a grid already in place.
Interview questions about Playwright
Questions from our Interview Vault that test Playwright knowledge. Answer aloud first, then reveal the model answer.
What makes UI tests flaky, and how do you fix the three most common causes?
Timing: fixed sleeps race the DOM, so use auto-waiting actions and retrying assertions. Shared or dirty data: create data per test through an API and avoid shared accounts. Order dependence: make each test independent and run them in random order. Quarantine a flaky test with a ticket and fix the root cause instead of adding blind retries.

Which locator strategy do you prefer and why?
User-facing locators first: role and accessible name, label text, or a dedicated test id attribute. They survive refactors and double as an accessibility check. Avoid long CSS or XPath chains, positional selectors and generated class names, which break when layout changes.

Two senior testers disagree on rewriting the Selenium suite in Playwright. How do you decide?
Name the problems with numbers (flake rate, run time, maintenance hours), pilot the new tool on one area with success criteria and a time box, and keep the old suite running. Decide from the pilot data and the team's skills, then plan the migration in slices.

Playwright FAQ
Is Playwright better than Selenium?
For new web projects it is usually quicker to stabilise because waiting, tracing and parallelism are built in. Selenium remains the better fit for large existing suites, real Safari and unusual browser targets.
Can Playwright test mobile apps?
It emulates mobile viewports, touch and device settings in the browser, and Chrome on Android is experimentally supported. It does not drive native iOS or Android apps; use Appium, Espresso or XCUITest for that.
How much do jobs that ask for Playwright pay?
Listings that mention Playwright and publish a pay range have a median of about $99k a year in USD terms (middle half $69k to $140k, from 171 posted ranges).
