Learn Cypress in five steps
A practical order that gets you to a working project. Build something at each step; reading alone does not stick.
- 1
Install and write a first spec
Open the runner, write describe/it blocks and use cy.visit, cy.get and cy.contains.
- 2
Understand the command queue
Commands are queued and retried, not awaited; learn what that means for variables and conditionals.
- 3
Control the network
Stub and spy on requests with cy.intercept and wait on aliases instead of timeouts.
- 4
Custom commands and session reuse
Add cy.login with cy.session so authentication runs once per spec.
- 5
Component testing and CI
Mount components in isolation and run headless in CI with parallelisation and video or screenshots.
Cypress vs Playwright
| Aspect | Cypress | Playwright |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Runs in the browser with your app | Controls the browser from outside |
| Languages | JavaScript and TypeScript only | TypeScript, Python, Java, C# |
| Multi-tab and cross-origin | Limited; cy.origin covers part of it | Straightforward with contexts and pages |
| Debugging | Time-travel snapshots in the runner | Trace viewer with DOM, network and console |
Choose Cypress when
Your front-end team owns the tests, wants a fast interactive loop and mostly tests one origin.
Choose Playwright when
You need multiple tabs, several origins, WebKit or a non-JavaScript language.

Which locator strategy do you prefer and why?
User-facing locators first: role and accessible name, label text, or a dedicated test id attribute. They survive refactors and double as an accessibility check. Avoid long CSS or XPath chains, positional selectors and generated class names, which break when layout changes.

Why use API calls to prepare state in UI tests?
Logging in and building state through the UI is slow and fails for reasons unrelated to the behaviour under test. Create data through the API and reuse a stored authenticated session, then exercise only the UI flow you care about. The test gets faster and failures point at the feature.
