What Selenium is used for in QA

Selenium is the long-standing open-source standard for browser automation. It implements the W3C WebDriver protocol and has bindings for Java, Python, C#, JavaScript, Ruby and Kotlin.

  • Cross-browser regression suites that run on a Selenium Grid or a cloud provider.
  • Large enterprise suites in Java or C# paired with TestNG, JUnit or NUnit.
  • Testing against real Safari and older browser versions that other tools skip.
  • The base layer under several tools, including Appium and many low-code platforms.

Learning path

Learn Selenium in five steps

A practical order that gets you to a working project. Build something at each step; reading alone does not stick.

  1. 1

Set up WebDriver and write a first script

Install a binding, start a driver with Selenium Manager and open a page with assertions in your test runner.

  2. 2

    Locators and explicit waits

Use By.id, CSS and accessible names, and WebDriverWait with expected conditions; never mix implicit and explicit waits.

  3. 3

    Structure with page objects

Wrap pages in small classes, keep assertions in the tests and build a driver factory.

  4. 4

    Parallel runs and Grid

Run tests in parallel with thread-safe drivers and point them at a Selenium Grid or cloud.

  5. 5

    Reporting and CI

Add screenshots on failure, a report (Allure) and a pipeline job with retries only for diagnosis.

Choose Selenium when

You maintain a Java or C# estate, need real Safari or IE-mode coverage, or have an existing grid and trained team.

Choose Playwright when

You want auto-waiting, traces and a built-in runner on a greenfield web app.

Interview

Interview questions about Selenium

Questions from our Interview Vault that test Selenium knowledge. Answer aloud first, then reveal the model answer.

What makes UI tests flaky, and how do you fix the three most common causes?

Timing: fixed sleeps race the DOM, so use auto-waiting actions and retrying assertions. Shared or dirty data: create data per test through an API and avoid shared accounts. Order dependence: make each test independent and run them in random order. Quarantine a flaky test with a ticket and fix the root cause instead of adding blind retries.

Explain the Page Object Model and where it breaks down.

A page object wraps a page's locators and actions so tests read as intent and a selector changes in one place. It breaks down when objects become giant, hide assertions, or duplicate shared widgets. Prefer small component objects, keep assertions in the tests, and compose helpers instead of inheriting from a base page.

QA Automation Engineer · Mid · Architecture

Two senior testers disagree on rewriting the Selenium suite in Playwright. How do you decide?

Name the problems with numbers (flake rate, run time, maintenance hours), pilot the new tool on one area with success criteria and a time box, and keep the old suite running. Decide from the pilot data and the team's skills, then plan the migration in slices.

FAQ

Selenium FAQ

Is Selenium still worth learning?

Yes. It is the most widely listed web automation tool in job ads and its WebDriver protocol underpins other tools. Learn it for employability and move to Playwright when a new project allows.

Why are Selenium tests flaky?

Mostly from timing: acting before an element is ready, mixing implicit and explicit waits, and shared test data. Wait for explicit conditions, isolate data per test and keep locators stable.

How much do jobs that ask for Selenium pay?

Listings that mention Selenium and publish a pay range have a median of about $95k a year in USD terms (middle half $69k to $118k, from 189 posted ranges).
