What it is

What k6 is used for in QA

k6 is an open-source load-testing tool from Grafana Labs. Scripts are written in JavaScript and executed by a Go engine, with thresholds that pass or fail a run.

  • API and microservice load tests in CI pipelines.
  • Arrival-rate scenarios that avoid coordinated omission.
  • Smoke, soak, stress and spike tests defined as code.
  • Streaming metrics to Grafana, Prometheus or cloud services.

Learning path

Learn k6 in five steps

A practical order that gets you to a working project. Build something at each step; reading alone does not stick.

  1. 1

    Run a first script

Write a script with http.get, checks and options, and run it with k6 run.

  2. 2

    Thresholds and checks

Define pass or fail rules such as p95 under 500 ms and error rate under 1%.

  3. 3

    Scenarios and executors

Use ramping VUs and constant-arrival-rate to model realistic traffic.

  4. 4

    Data and modularity

Load data with SharedArray and split helpers into modules.

  5. 5

    CI and observability

Run in the pipeline and stream results to Grafana for trend analysis.

Interview

Interview questions about k6

Questions from our Interview Vault that test k6 knowledge. Answer aloud first, then reveal the model answer.

How do you add a performance smoke test to a pull request pipeline without making it noisy?

Run a short k6 script at low load against a stable environment on a dedicated runner and assert on p95 latency and error rate with a tolerance around a stored baseline. Keep heavy load and soak tests nightly. Trend results so slow drift is visible even when each run passes.

SDET · Mid · Performance

Each iteration takes 2 seconds including think time and you need 100 iterations per second. How many virtual users?

Little's Law: N = 100 per second times 2 seconds = 200 concurrent virtual users. If the system slows down and iterations take 4 seconds, a closed model with 200 users only delivers 50 per second, which is why arrival-rate models matter.

Performance Test Engineer · Mid · Calculation

What is coordinated omission and why does it matter?

A closed-model load generator waits for each response before sending the next request. When the server stalls, the tool stops sending and records few slow samples, so latency looks better than it was. Use open-model executors (k6 constant-arrival-rate, Gatling open injection) or correct the histogram.

FAQ

k6 FAQ

Does k6 use Node.js?

No. Scripts are JavaScript but run in k6's Go runtime, so you cannot import arbitrary npm packages without bundling and the Node APIs are not available.

Can k6 test a browser?

There is a browser module based on Chromium for front-end metrics. For load, protocol-level scripts are far cheaper than driving browsers.

How much do jobs that ask for k6 pay?

Listings that mention k6 and publish a pay range have a median of about $110k a year in USD terms (middle half $92k to $185k, from 17 posted ranges).

Which QA roles use k6?

Roles that use it: SDET (US median $131k mid-level), Performance Test Engineer (US median $147k mid-level).
