Key findings
- 56% lead, 38% manager, 6% director or head. That is 316, 212 and 33 of 561 postings at lead level.
- Leads still code. 61% of lead postings name an automation framework, against 34% of manager and 36% of director postings.
- Managers are asked for process tools. 56% of manager postings name Jira and 26% TestRail, against 35% and 16% for leads.
- A lead or manager title does not out-post a senior engineer. US medians of posted ranges: senior individual contributor $185k (n=73), manager $160k (n=36), lead $140k (n=28).
01Three titles, one band
We took every public QA posting classed as lead level (561) and sorted the titles by the word that carries the rank: lead (or principal, chapter lead), manager, or director and head. The three share a band, but they are not one job.
Titles such as 'Lead QA Automation Engineer' and 'Principal SDET' count as lead because the word names the rank. 'Senior Manager' and 'Associate Director' stay with manager and director. The ladder is: lead (runs the work and still does it), manager (runs the people and the process), director or head (runs the function and the budget).
02What each one is asked to do
A job title is a promise about how a day is spent. The tool names in the posting show whether that day is spent in a test suite or in a planning board.
| Tool | Lead (n=316) | Manager (n=212) | Director or head (n=33) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selenium | 41% | 19% | 24% |
| Playwright | 40% | 25% | 30% |
| Cypress | 26% | 14% | 18% |
| Python | 24% | 19% | 15% |
| Jira | 35% | 56% | 36% |
| TestRail | 16% | 26% | 24% |
| Xray | 9% | 19% | 21% |
| Postman | 17% | 17% | 9% |
| Any automation framework | 61% | 34% | 36% |
Selenium and Playwright are each named in about four of ten lead postings (41% and 40%). In manager postings the weight moves to Jira (56%), TestRail (26%) and Xray (19%). The reading: a lead is expected to review a pull request on the suite, a manager to own the test plan, the report and the release call.
03Test lead or QA lead?
'QA lead' is the common word: 193 of 316 lead postings use QA or quality assurance. 'Automation lead' follows with 72, and 'test lead' is rare (24). The word before 'lead' changes how hands-on the job is.
| Title family | Postings | Name a framework | Name Jira | Remote |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| QA lead | 193 | 59% | 39% | 18% |
| Automation lead | 72 | 79% | 25% | 15% |
| Test lead | 24 | 38% | 50% | 17% |
| SDET lead | 17 | 76% | 6% | 12% |
Families with fewer than 10 postings are left out.
An automation lead or an SDET lead is a senior engineer with a team: about 79% of those postings name a framework. A test lead is the most process-heavy of the four: the sample is small, but half name Jira. If you want to keep coding, search for 'automation lead' and 'SDET lead' as well as 'QA lead'.
04How many years they ask for
Where the posting states a number of years, the median is 6 years for lead (215 postings), 7 for manager (139) and 10 for director or head (19). About 32% of lead postings state no number, so treat these as a floor, not a rule.
| Title | Postings that state years | Median years asked |
|---|---|---|
| Lead | 215 | 6 |
| Manager | 139 | 7 |
| Director or head | 19 | 10 |
05Posted pay
Only employer-published US dollar annual ranges count here: 28 for lead, 36 for manager, 6 for director or head, and 73 for senior individual contributors for comparison.
- Middle half of ranges
- Median
- Lowest to highest
The manager median is $20k above the lead median. The senior individual contributor median ($185k) is above both. In this sample taking a lead or manager title does not show up as higher posted pay than staying a senior engineer. Only director and head roles top it. That says nothing about pay after the offer: managers also get bonus and equity that a range does not show.
06Where and how they work
| Title | Remote | Hybrid | On-site | Contract | Top country |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lead | 17% | 23% | 60% | 11% | United States (30%) |
| Manager | 18% | 20% | 62% | 11% | United States (42%) |
| Director or head | 15% | 27% | 58% | 15% | United States (48%) |
Leadership is mostly on site: only 17% of lead and 18% of manager postings are remote, against 22% for QA postings overall. The reason is not clear from the postings. Teams may want the person who runs the test strategy in the room.
07Quick answers
Is lead higher than a manager?
Usually one step lower. A lead runs the work of a team, a manager runs the team. Manager postings ask for a median 7 years against 6 and post $20k more at the US median ($160k against $140k), but the samples are 36 and 28 ranges.
What is the hierarchy of QA positions?
Tester or QA engineer, senior engineer, lead, manager, director or head of QA. Engineers can go further on the technical side (staff, principal, architect) without managing people.
How much does a QA lead earn?
In US postings with a published range, the median midpoint is $140k for lead and $160k for manager. For other countries use the salary pages, which combine posted ranges with a model.
What is the highest position in QA?
Head of QA, VP of Quality or Director of Engineering Quality. They are rare: 33 of 561 lead-level postings, and they ask for ten years of experience at the median where stated.
08How to choose
The ladder is not a sorting hat. Choose by what you want to touch each day.
- Stay hands-on: aim at lead or automation lead. Be ready to talk about framework design, flaky tests and code review. 61% of these postings name a framework.
- Move into people and process: aim at manager. Be ready to talk about test strategy, release gates and hiring. Jira, TestRail and Xray are the keywords.
- Want both: choose an SDET or automation lead role at a company with a small team, where the lead owns a suite and mentors two or three engineers.
- Not sure yet: take the QA level test to see where you stand, then read the career roadmap.
If you hire for this role, a lead and a manager are two different searches. Tell a recruiter which one you need: talk to PassRidge.
09Method and limits
Sample: 3,863 public postings harvested 20 Oct 2026 from employer career pages and public job feeds. Listings are postings, not people or confirmed openings: one role open in several cities counts several times (2,417 distinct titles across 3,863 postings). PassRidge talent-pipeline roles (149) are excluded from every statistic.
We classify a posting as lead level from its title and the seniority asked. The word that carries the rank decides the group: director or head first, then manager, then lead.
A posting counts once, whatever number of cities it lists.
Pay figures use only ranges the employer published (605 postings). Ranges in other currencies are converted at the indicative rates in our rate table dated 2026-10-01; hourly ranges are annualised at 2,080 hours. Employers that publish a range are not a random sample of employers, and most of them are US companies.
