What Kotlin is used for in QA
Kotlin is a modern JVM language and the preferred language for Android development. QA uses it for Espresso tests and increasingly for JVM-based test tooling.
- Espresso and Compose UI tests for Android apps.
- Unit and instrumentation tests in Android projects.
- Appium and REST Assured suites written in Kotlin.
- Gatling Kotlin DSL for load tests.
Which roles use Kotlin
Pay is the US median for a mid-level hire. Other levels and countries are on each role's page.

Learn Kotlin in five steps
A practical order that gets you to a working project. Build something at each step; reading alone does not stick.
- 1
Core language
Learn null safety, data classes, extension functions and coroutines.
- 2
Android basics
Understand activities, fragments or Compose, and the app lifecycle.
- 3
Unit tests
Use JUnit and MockK for logic and view-model tests.
- 4
Espresso
Write UI tests with matchers, idling resources and test doubles.
- 5
CI and device farms
Run on emulators in CI and a cloud device farm.
Kotlin vs Java
| Aspect | Kotlin | Java |
|---|---|---|
| Null safety | Built in | Not built in |
| Android | First-class and recommended | Supported |
| Conciseness | High | Lower |
| Job demand in QA | Android niche | Broad |

Interview questions about Kotlin
Questions from our Interview Vault that test Kotlin knowledge. Answer aloud first, then reveal the model answer.
When would you pick Espresso or XCUITest over Appium?
Native frameworks run in the same toolchain as the app, synchronise with the UI thread so they are faster and more stable, and allow white-box access. The cost is two suites, one per platform. Appium gives one cross-platform black-box suite in a language you choose, with slower and less deterministic execution.
Mobile QA Engineer · Mid · Tool choice
What causes Appium test instability and how do you reduce it?
Slow or fragile lookups (XPath), implicit waits and leftover device state. Use accessibility ids or resource ids, explicit waits, reset app state through launch arguments or adb, and one device per parallel session with its own ports. Keep driver and OS versions pinned.

What is coordinated omission and why does it matter?
A closed-model load generator waits for each response before sending the next request. When the server stalls, the tool stops sending and records few slow samples, so latency looks better than it was. Use open-model executors (k6 constant-arrival-rate, Gatling open injection) or correct the histogram.

Kotlin FAQ
Do Android testers need Kotlin?
For automation yes: new Android code is Kotlin-first, and Espresso tests are most easily written in the same language.
Is Kotlin hard if I know Java?
No. It interoperates fully with Java and most Java testers are productive in Kotlin within weeks.
How much do jobs that ask for Kotlin pay?
Listings that mention Kotlin and publish a pay range have a median of about $74k a year in USD terms (middle half $72k to $205k, from 8 posted ranges).
Which QA roles use Kotlin?
