Learning path

Learn Postman in five steps

A practical order that gets you to a working project. Build something at each step; reading alone does not stick.

  1. 1

    Send requests and read responses

Call a public API, inspect status, headers and body, and save requests to a collection.

  2. 2

    Variables and environments

Use environment and collection variables for base URLs and tokens.

  3. 3

    Write tests

Add pm.test assertions on status, schema and values and chain requests through variables.

  4. 4

    Data-driven runs

Use the collection runner with CSV or JSON data and pre-request scripts.

  5. 5

    Automate in CI

Run collections with the Postman CLI, publish JUnit reports and monitor critical flows.

Interview

Interview questions about Postman

Questions from our Interview Vault that test Postman knowledge. Answer aloud first, then reveal the model answer.

Why use API calls to prepare state in UI tests?

Logging in and building state through the UI is slow and fails for reasons unrelated to the behaviour under test. Create data through the API and reuse a stored authenticated session, then exercise only the UI flow you care about. The test gets faster and failures point at the feature.

How do you test code that calls a third-party payment API?

Unit-test your logic against a stub or fake at the HTTP boundary. Add contract checks against the provider's schema or sandbox, and a few real sandbox smoke tests. Cover failure modes explicitly: timeouts, 5xx responses, duplicate webhooks and idempotency keys.

SDET · Mid · Integration

What do you check when testing JWT authentication?

Accepting alg none, RS256 to HS256 key confusion, weak HMAC secrets, missing validation of exp, aud and iss, kid injection, revocation and storage location. Remember the payload is only base64url encoded, so it must not hold secrets.

FAQ

Postman FAQ

Is Postman enough for API automation?

For smoke and contract-style checks yes. Large suites with heavy data setup and logic are easier to maintain as code, for example REST Assured or Playwright's request API.

Is Postman free?

There is a free plan with limits, and paid plans for teams. Newman, the open-source runner, executes exported collections in CI.

How much do jobs that ask for Postman pay?

Listings that mention Postman and publish a pay range have a median of about $93k a year in USD terms (middle half $62k to $120k, from 160 posted ranges).

Which QA roles use Postman?

Roles that use it: Manual QA Tester (US median $82k mid-level), QA Automation Engineer (US median $121k mid-level), Security / Penetration Tester (US median $181k mid-level), Business / Test Analyst (US median $89k mid-level).
