QA for automotive

Vehicle software runs on real-time controllers and infotainment stacks, and a defect may be a safety issue. QA here means hardware-in-the-loop and simulation, requirements traceability to safety goals and compliance with functional-safety and cybersecurity standards.

What we test

What we test in automotive.

The risks that matter most in this industry, and the checks we put in place for each. Engineers are matched on these, not only on tool names.

01

Hardware and software in the loop

Tests of control logic in simulation (SIL) and on real controllers (HIL) before the code reaches a vehicle.

02

Infotainment and connectivity

Navigation, phone projection, over-the-air updates and voice, tested across variants and markets.

03

Functional safety

Tests tied to safety goals and ASIL levels, with evidence a safety assessor can review.

04

Variants and regression

The same software across models, trims and regions, which multiplies the regression matrix.

The stack our automotive engineers work in.

Tools common in automotive QA. We staff against your stack, so this list is a starting point and not a limit.

Compliance considerations

What shapes automotive testing.

These standards describe obligations that usually apply to the product or the client. PassRidge does not hold them on your behalf and nothing here is legal advice. Your compliance owner sets the scope.

01

ISO 26262

Functional safety for road vehicles, with ASIL A to D integrity levels that decide how rigorous testing must be.

02

Automotive SPICE

A process-assessment model that suppliers are rated against, including verification and traceability.

03

ISO/SAE 21434 and UNECE R155

Cybersecurity engineering for road vehicles, and the UN regulation that requires a cyber security management system for type approval.

04

UNECE R156

Software update management, relevant to over-the-air updates.

Our engineers work inside your controls, on masked or synthetic data, and produce test evidence in the format your reviewers ask for. How security works in every engagement.

FAQ

QA for automotive: your questions.

Can your engineers work with ASPICE and ISO 26262?

Our regulated-industry engineers have worked in those processes. They follow your safety plan; the safety case and assessment remain your responsibility.

Do you test on real hardware?

Where the client provides access to a HIL bench or remote test rack, yes. Otherwise we test in simulation and in software-in-the-loop.

What tools are typical?

Python and Robot Framework for test scripts, CI on Jenkins, and requirement and test tracking in Jira with Xray. Automotive-specific tools such as CAN analysers are supplied by the client.

Which engagement model do you recommend for automotive?

Usually dedicated qa team. Programmes run for years and need a team that knows the ECU variants and tooling. Dedicated QA team starts in about 21 days, mid-level rates begin at $34 an hour and the minimum term is 6 months. The five models are compared at /outsourcing/.
