-
What is the difference between internationalization and localization?
Model answer. Internationalization (i18n) is engineering the product to be adaptable: externalised strings, Unicode, locale-aware formatting. Localization (l10n) adapts it for a specific locale: translation, formats, imagery. Test i18n with pseudo-localization before paying for translation.
-
What do you check in linguistic versus functional localization QA?
Model answer. Linguistic: accuracy, grammar, terminology consistency, tone and untranslated strings. Functional: truncation, overlap, encoding, layout, and date, number and currency formats working in the real UI.
-
What is pseudo-localization and what does it reveal?
Model answer. It replaces characters with accented look-alikes, pads strings by 30 to 40% and wraps them in markers, for example [Ĥéļļö Ŵöŕļď]. Hard-coded strings show up unmarked, truncation shows up as missing end markers, and encoding problems show up as broken characters.
-
Which locale-specific formats commonly break?
Model answer. Date order and calendars, number separators (1,234.56 versus 1.234,56) and currency placement. Also 12 or 24 hour time, first day of the week, sorting and collation, name and address order, and plural forms.
-
What do you test for Arabic or Hebrew right-to-left layouts?
Model answer. A mirrored layout, direction-implying icons mirrored but not logos or media controls, mixed text where numbers and Latin words sit inside RTL sentences, input caret and alignment, and punctuation placement. CSS logical properties make this much easier.
-
Why must strings not be concatenated and why is if n equals 1 not enough for plurals?
Model answer. Word order and grammar differ between languages, and many have more than two plural forms: Russian has one, few, many and other, and Arabic has six. Use ICU MessageFormat with CLDR plural rules and give translators whole sentences with named placeholders.
-
Text shows as ä instead of ä. How do you diagnose it?
Model answer. That is UTF-8 bytes decoded as Latin-1 or Windows-1252, known as mojibake. Check the Content-Type charset and HTML meta charset, the database connection and collation, file encodings, and look for double encoding where text is converted twice.
-
How do you set up continuous localization QA?
Model answer. Sync strings through a translation management system and give translators context screenshots. Run automated checks for placeholders and length in CI, and review in context on staging. Keep a glossary and style guide, and get linguistic sign-off per release after a string freeze.

Practise like an interview
- Say your answer out loud before revealing the model answer.
- Add a real example from your work. Interviewers remember stories, not definitions.
- Mark what you can answer cleanly and repeat the rest tomorrow.
- Notice the trade-offs in each answer; senior questions are scored on judgement.
